Sutton Central Library Gallery aims to provide the London Borough of Sutton&rsquo;s residents with a wide range of contemporary art, heritage and history experiences. Entrance to the gallery and access to the exhibition is free for all members of the public, with the exception of specific events. The gallery space is available for hire to professional artists, collectives and non-profit groups wishing to exhibit their work individually or as a group.

Honeywood Museum hosts regular exhibitions as part of the events programme. The Grade II listed building next to Carshalton Ponds dates from the 17th century but was extended in the Victorian and Edwardian periods. The house has been beautifully restored to show how it would have looked when it was a family home. The Edwardian era billiards room, drawing room, bathroom and kitchen will let visitors step into the past and see for themselves how the residents of Honeywood would have lived.

Whitehall Historic House&nbsp;hosts regular exhibitions as part of the events programme. Built around 1500, Whitehall is a Grade II* listed Tudor house in the heart of Cheam Village. It is owned and managed by the London Borough of Sutton who opened it as a local museum in 1978 following a campaign by the community.
Following the recently completed National Lottery Heritage Fund refurbishment, we are delighted to invite visitors back to Whitehall to rediscover this incredible site for FREE. This Grade II* listed property is an impressive feature at the heart of the picturesque village of Cheam.

Open the door to this unique arts and crafts gem, built between 1902-1904 by artist and craftsman Frank R. Dickinson. Inspired by Ruskin, Dickinson bought one of the first plots of land in this developing South London suburb at the end of the nineteenth century. Little Holland House is open on the first Sunday of each month with regular tours about the history of the house throughout the day.

With origins dating from the mid-17th century,&nbsp;<a href="https://libraries.sutton.gov.uk/digital-content/sutton-heritage/honeywood-museum/" target="_blank" aria-invalid="true" rel="noopener">Honeywood Museum</a> is a Grade II listed building set in the picturesque heart of Carshalton&rsquo;s historic Conservation Area. Honeywood stands at the western end of Carshalton Ponds surrounded by historic buildings and water features which together form one of the most interesting and attractive areas in Greater London.
&nbsp;
Civil ceremonies are hosted in the Drawing room - a light and airy space, with fine examples of Edwardian decor. French doors open out onto the beautiful garden, and the room seats 40 guests plus the couple to be.
&nbsp;
<a href="https://honeywoodtearoom.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Honeywood Tea Rooms</a>&nbsp;provide after ceremony drinks and menu options.

eBook readers allow the text of books to be increased and altered to suit the reader. These can be downloaded onto a smart device at home for free. eBooks available from <a href="https://libraries.sutton.gov.uk/digital-content/digital-resources/digital-library">BorrowBox</a> and <a href="https://libraries.sutton.gov.uk/digital-content/digital-resources/digital-library">Libby</a> support different colour themes available (e.g. Lite, Sepia, Dark) and different fonts available including Dyslexia friendly font. BorrowBox has adjustable text spacing (e.g. narrow, normal &amp; wide). Libby has a &ldquo;define&rdquo; feature, allowing you to see the meaning of a word within the text.

<h3>eAudiobooks</h3>
eAudiobooks are available to library members via <a href="https://libraries.sutton.gov.uk/digital-content/digital-resources/digital-library">BorrowBox</a> and <a href="https://libraries.sutton.gov.uk/digital-content/digital-resources/digital-library">uLibrary</a> to be downloaded to a smart device. The play speed of eAudiobooks can be made faster or slower based on the user&rsquo;s personal preference. This feature may benefit those with hearing or mental difficulties who may need more time to interpret audio.

All libraries stock a range of titles in large print, both fiction and information books. At Sutton Library the large print is located on the ground floor. Dictionaries, the Bible and a larger selection of information books are available.

Audiobooks are available in all our libraries. Titles include popular fiction, crime, thrillers, sagas, classics, biographies, travel, humour, etc. On CDs &amp; MP3 format. Audio books can be borrowed free of charge if you are visually impaired or have another disability or condition which makes it difficult for you to read print. Please ask for your membership to be updated.

<h3>Digtial Newspapers and Magazines</h3>
<a href="https://libraries.sutton.gov.uk/digital-content/digital-resources/digital-library">PressReader</a>, free for library members, features publications from up to 60 countries and 18 languages. Sections of text can be highlighted for easier reading. There is audio narration available from text. Publications can be presented as was printed, in a screen friendly format and/or full screen. And &ldquo;SmartZoom&rdquo; allows automatic zoom in to the start of an article. <a href="https://libraries.sutton.gov.uk/digital-content/digital-resources/digital-library">Libby, by Overdrive</a> provides digital magazines with can be scaled in text size and has different colour modes (bright, sepia and dark) for a more comfortable reading experience.

<h1 style="text-align: center;">Call for Artists, Authors, Performers, Facilitators and Creative Health Practitioners</h1>
&nbsp;
Artists, Authors, Creatives and Creative Health Practitoners are all being sought for Resilient Futures - a Creative Health programme for children, taking place across the London Borough of Sutton&rsquo;s Cultural Services venues and outreach venues, such as family hubs, leisure centres and parks. The programme will take place across 2025 and early 2026 and will feature a children&rsquo;s summer festival: Sutton&rsquo;s Summer of Stories, during the 2025 summer holidays.
&nbsp;
What&rsquo;s on offer: 20 individual commissions to develop and present a performance or engagement activity once across the course of the programme. Sessions must focus on wellbeing and emotional resilience and applications must demonstrate a clear link to these themes / outcomes in their applications.
&nbsp;
Applications that feature or are inspired by a children&rsquo;s book or story will be prioritised for our summer holiday 2025 programme. Applications not featuring a children&rsquo;s book or story will be commissioned during other holiday periods during the project&rsquo;s timeframe.
&nbsp;
Where: London Borough of Sutton, various locations
&nbsp;
Fee: &pound;350 fee per artist / organisation, for one public session during the project&rsquo;s timeframe, development of the work, contribution to project evaluation and contribution to a social media campaign to promote the event.

<h3 style="text-align: center;">How to Apply&nbsp;</h3>
 All those wishing to apply for funding to develop and deliver their Resilient Futures proposal must complete the application form and checklist, &lsquo;Application - Resilient Futures&rsquo;, which requests the following information:&nbsp;
1. A written or verbal description of your work on a website, in articles or on social media platforms (instagram, X etc.), with reference, where possible, to experience delivering public activities or services. If you would prefer not to share online links please provide a PDF document with visual or written examples of your work - no more than 10mb.&nbsp;
2. A supporting statement (500-1000 words max. or 5 mins film or voice recording), which includes:&nbsp; a) An outline of your interest in taking up this project, and what you hope to achieve from the project&nbsp; b) Details of how your project meets the brief, expectations and outputs. Please include details of your business or charity registration if you have it but this is not mandatory.
 &nbsp;Completed forms along with the above information should be emailed to: arts@sutton.gov.uk. Please mark your submission &ldquo;Proposal for Resilient Futures&rsquo;&rsquo;. Applications close on 31 March 2025, 11.59pm.

Self access was introduced to increase opening times, and provide access to our libraries independently and at times convenient to you.
Sutton Council also needs to save<a href="https://moderngov.sutton.gov.uk/documents/s81940/Corporate%20Plan%20MTFS%20and%20Workforce%20Strategy%20-%20Appendix%20B.pdf"> &pound;20 million by 2026</a> and deliver its<a href="https://www.sutton.gov.uk/ambitiousforsutton"> Ambitious for Sutton 2022 - 2027 priorities</a>.&nbsp; We want to continue developing the library offer to customers whilst being able to deliver the savings that the Council has to make over the next three years.

Join us for an exciting talk from the St. Helier Charitable Foundation, as they discuss their latest World War II project.

''Fight for Freedom- Carshalton and Wallington's War'' will capture World War Two memories, photographs and stories from the residents of Carshalton and Wallington. Concentrating mainly on the period 1938-1946, the project will offer new perspectives on the home front, with any collected materials being deposited in Sutton Council's archives.

<h3>Fight for Freedom: Carshalton and Wallington's War</h3>

Fight for Freedom: Carshalton and Wallington's War is a community project being delivered by St Helier Charitable Trust, in partnership with LBS Cultural Services between August 2024-July 2026. In remembrance of WW2 this project will be collecting memories, photographs and memorabilia relating to Carshalton and Wallington during the war years, 1938-1946 for a website and exhibitions around the borough.

The team are looking for participants for the project and also volunteers to help collect and record information, help with reminiscence sessions, and undertake research. Training will be given. Please get in touch with the team at cwlocalhistory@gmail.com for more details!

Did you know that Sutton Libraries Local Studies collection has an extensive collection of Croydon airport materials. Or that we can help identify names on local War Memorials or in Commonwealth War Graves from local cemeteries.&nbsp; The searchroom holds information on local bomb sites and holds aerial OS photos of the area taken after WW2 to identify bombed areas for redevelopment.&nbsp; If you have an interest in how WW2 affected the Sutton area then do get in touch to see how we can help your research or put you in touch with a local WW2 research project in the area until mid 2026.

Exhibition: Bun n Cheese: Things that bring me joy
As part of black history month, the Gallery space at Sutton Library will be hosting a month long exhibition titled "Bun n Cheese: Things that bring me joy".
Curated by the the writer / artist / academic, Michael Mcillan, this exhibition was made in collaboration with ten Black British elders of Caribbean heritage, and it the culmination of a five-week oral history exploring objects from their homes that bring them joy and speaks to their lived experience in Britain.

South Asian Heritage Month
South Asian Heritage Month is the name given to the month-long celebration in the South Asian diaspora to celebrate the heritage of people with roots in the South Asian countries of India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, Nepal, Bhutan, and the Maldives.
It runs from 18 July to 17 August each year.

Green Libraries Week runs from 7-13 October 2024, celebrating libraries with a focus on the climate and sustainability.&nbsp;

Let's take a quick look at how borrowing books can help shrink your carbon footprint.

Borrowing a Book Helps the Environment
When you borrow a book instead of buying a new one, you contribute to a positive environmental impact. This action reduces the demand for producing new books, which in turn saves resources and energy.&nbsp; Every time you borrow a book, it generates a "carbon handprint" of 0.7 kg of CO2. This means that by choosing to borrow, you're effectively preventing 0.7 kg of CO2 from being released into the atmosphere, helping to reduce your overall carbon footprint. Between April 2023 and April 2024, customers from Sutton Libraries prevented more than 600 tons of CO2&nbsp; entering the atmosphere by borrowing books from the libraries instead of buying them!&nbsp;

Many of these students come from overseas, and are starting their lives in the UK. It explains numerous things that may be different or new, containing the basic facts and information needed to help succeed in British life. Culture, customs, religion, travelling and public transport, health, hygiene and the NHS are among the many topics covered.</div>

<div>Hong Kongers book collection: In November 2023, we started a book collection with Sutton&rsquo;s Hong Kong residents that helps to preserve Hong Kong culture, and foster integration. Over 1000 books have been issued since then!</div>

June 1st - 14th is Hi-Vis fortnight, a time that we at Sutton Libraries&rsquo; celebrate &lsquo;all things&rsquo; related to accessible libraries and reading, with a special focus on the resources we provide for people with a vision or print impairment!&nbsp;

Accessible and Spoken Word Stock
All of our libraries contain a collection of large-print fiction and non-fiction books, as well as audiobooks on CD. These items are available to borrow free of charge for visually impaired library users.

A large collection of digital newspapers and magazines are available to borrow through the pressreader app, or at <a href="https://www.pressreader.com/catalog">https://www.pressreader.com/catalog</a>.&nbsp;

Pressreader provides titles in mutlple languages, as well as English. Many of these titles can be translated to users via text-to-speech technology.&nbsp;

V.I.P Reading Group
This Visually Impaired group meets bimonthly at Sutton Library for a coffee morning, usually on the last Friday morning in the month.
